Lot Essay

This watercolour shares the same viewpoint as 'Heidelberg from the Terrace', offered as lot 138, Christie's London, 6 November, 1995. It is possible that the watercolour is a preparatory study for the later oil, in which the figures in the foreground were painted by John 'Spanish' Philip.
