A large Chinese rectangular wooden plaque carved in relief and painted and gilt with four large characters 'Bao Xing Zhi Zhao' beside a seal mark and lines of calligraphy, all within a border of confronting dragons chasing flaming pearls among cloud scrolls -- 37¼in. (94.6cm) x 21¼in. (54cm), dated the 28th May of the 29th year of the Guangxu period.
The plaque was probably a shop sign and the text refers to the teaching and translating of French therein.
