Lot Essay

Although he had a preference for league as opposed to County Cricket, Sydney Francis Barnes (1873-1967) is regarded as among the best bowlers of all time. In 27 Test matches against Australia and South Africa between 1901 and 1914, he took 189 wickets at an average of 16.43. His finest hour came against Australia at Melbourne on December 30, 1912, when in the space of 11 overs he took 5 wickets for 6 runs.
