modelled in papier mâché as a Bristol Maid in the Charity School uniform of red frock, white cape, bonnet, apron and gloves, on wood stand -- 7in. (18cm.) high, Early 19th Century, inscribed in ink on the base BRISTOL 1700

Lot Essay

The Bristol Charity School was founded in 1634 by John Whitson, to provide education and training in sewing. Wax-headed dolls in the school uniform are sometimes found and were sold to defray costs. This rattle was probably made and sold for a similar reason although no other has as yet been recorded
