Lot Essay

"It is in this important edition of Virgil that Robert Estienne first made full use of the three sizes of his new roman type, possibly cut by Claude Garamond ... It became at once the most distinctive and influential French roman of the century, and set a new standard of typographical excellence" (Schreiber). It is commonly found, as here, with the textual commentary by Valeriano Bolzani.
