Lot Essay

SCARCE. Written in 1766, the Réflexions is the principal work of Anne Robert Jacques Turgot (1721-87), one of the great economists of his time. It first appeared in printed form in the journal Ephémérides Citoyen 1769-70. Physiocratic in inspiration, and yet also profoundly original, the work is of comparable importance to Smith's Wealth of Nations despite its relative brevity. Turgot was acquainted with Adam Smith, as well as many of the "philosophes," and the views of the two economists are regarded as in many respects harmonious.
