A Macao ivory chess set, mid 19th century
In natural and green stained hues, the royal pieces, bishops and pawns carved with human heads, the white king and queen portraying King Carlos I of Portugal and Marie Amelia, versus orientals, the knights with horses heads, the rooks with cannon and pennants, the pawns wearing helmets, all on baluster knopped stems carved with lobed, beaded ornament and floral ornament, the circular bases with radiating stiff-leaf bands
the kings -- 4 1/8in. (10.4cm) high, the pawns -- 2¾in. (7cm) high
