A CHINESE IVORY CHESS SET OF BUST TYPE, LATE 19TH CENTURY
In green stained and natural hues, the kings and queens modelled as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, the bishops wearing cleft mitres, the knights cuirassed noblemen astride rearing caparisonned steeds, the rooks as castelated turrets with pennants, the pawns as Willian Shakespeare, all on rectangular plinths, carved with panels of foliate ornament and strapwork, the bases to the green stained side also incised with red stained concentric circles to the bases
the kings -- 4 7/8in. (12.4cm) high, the pawns -- 3in. (7.6cm) high
