A FRENCH IVORY BUST TYPE CHESS SET, MID 18TH CENTURY
Carved on a theme of French versus Moors, in black stained and natural hues, the French king and queen crowned, the Moors wearing turbans, bishops as busts with heads to dexter, knights three quater length equestrian armed with swords, and bows and arrows respectively, rooks as castellated turrets, pawns as soldiers in tricorn hats and turbans respectively, all on knopped stems and circular bases
the kings -- 3¾in. (9.5cm) high, the pawns -- 2 3/8in. (6cm) high
later fitted in a leather bound and lined case
