Born on 14 October, 1633 son of Charles I and Henrietta Maria, James was crowned on 23 April 1685. His conversion to Catholicism was to cause a major decline in his popularity and the birth of his son Prince James Francis Edward "The Old Pretender" resulted in revolution. James was forced to flee to France, where he remained, dying of a stroke on 6 September 1701.
