A fine pair of silver and enamel covered vases
by Nelson Dawson, flared octagonal base tapering, to swollen body with everted rim, pierced with rectangular panels of Art Nouveau poppyheads, applied with twin strapwork handles, the body applied with enamel panels of violas in shades of blue, yellow and green, the domed cover pierced with viola panels, surmounted with amethyst ball finial in claw mount stamped marks ND London 1902 -- 25cm. high

Lot Essay

Trained as an architect, studying enamelling under Alexander Fischer Nelson Dawson set up the Artificers Guild in his Chiswick workshop, producing silver and enamelled ware until 1914. He taught his wife Edith Robinson to enamel and she produced enamels for jewellery and objects at his workshop from 1893. The Victoria and Albert museun include a vase by Dawson, inv nr M30 which bears a similar finial design.
