The present picture is a version of a work formerly in a private collection in Reggio Emilia (E.A.Safarik, Fetti, Milan, 1990, pp.311-12, no.A105); both are based on an engraving of the same subject by Hendrick Goltzius (Bartsch, III, p.18, no.24). Safarik (who has seen a photograph of the present picture) regards both pictures to be the work of an, as of yet, unidentified artist closely connected with the early work of Domenico Fetti.
