The anthology covers both England (e.g. Cornwall, Cirencester, Oxford, Northumberland, Jersey and in particular cathedrals and abbeys) and the continent (Switzerland, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Rome). The poems dwell on romantic themes such as nature, beauty and love, and the illustrations, mainly picturesque views, include a full-page watercolour of Marathon, a detailed full-page pencil drawing of Christ Church, Oxford, 2 full-page watercolours of women of the Portuguese court and numerous studies of flowers and Italianate cherubs.
