Lot Essay

First edition in bookform of Sechenov's classic Reflexes of the Brain, which was first published in 1863 in the journal Meditsinskii. Sechenov opposed to the prevailing approach in Russia of explaining the mechanism of the central nervous system purely on an anatomical basis and was the first to introduce the physiological approach. This attitude earned him the title of "the father of the Russian physiology", but at the same time strong censorship of the Government.
