Lot Essay

John Gabbitass (fl.1822-39) was the first recorded chair-maker working in Worksop and after his death in 1839 the business was carried on by his wife and family until the 1880's. This chair is an example of the most elaborate form of Windsor produced in the Nottinghamshire tradition.
