Lot Essay

In Maggs Nautica (1933) this work was priced at £52 10s. Although its relative value is probably not so high now, it is both remarkable for its scholarship and many magnificent plates, "depicting the art and history of shipbuilding, with views of all types of craft from the earliest periods." In this copy, the plate of "The Diamant, of 50 guns, French Ship of War," called for in vol. III, p. 116, has been bound into vol. II, opposite p. 117.
