Francis Pettit Smith (1808-74) and John Ericsson (1803-89) worked separately to produce the world's first practical screw-driven vessels. The latter was so outraged by the omission of his many inventions from the Centennial Exhibition, that he produced this record of his own "contributions" as an adjunct to it.
