A rare dry card compass, constructed in brass and vertically mounted, signed on the outer ring Mathiesen & Ritter, London, the printed semi-divided dial -- 4in. (10cm.) dia with 'Fleur de Lys' at north with sealing wax to the obverse to assist balance, mounted within a lower glass cylindrical chamber, the glass with an applied brass arrow pointing 'down', the upper chamber -- ¾in. (1.7cm.) in depth with card printed By Royal Letters Patent and makers name, the removable viewing glass acts as a magnifier, a hinged meridian/horizon line (?) may be raised to allow access, the whole loosly mounted within a mahogany case, the lower portion acting as its support, the top with a stuffed velvet pad to centre, the lid with brass inlaid push-button locks (dysfunctional) -- 7.5in. (19cm.) square
