The East Indiaman Hindostan, 1,248 tons, was built in 1789 and made her first round trip to the East between January 1790 and June 1791. Thereafter, she made a further four voyages and arrived home from the last on 13 June 1802. Refitted and reporvisioned, she left London early in January 1803 but was caught in a severe gale off Margate and was wrecked on the Wedge Sand with the lostt of 25 to 30 of her crew; although the picture dates the wreck to 13 January 1803, some sources state the 11th.
