Built in 1929 and designed by Charles Nicholson for the banker Herman Andrae Candida was a 23 metre of 174 tons, waterline 79.4 feet, 20.5 foot beam and 14.4 feet draught.

Lulworth, originally named Torpischore was designed by the White brothers of Itchen and built in 1920 to beat Britannia. Under the influence of Charles Nicholson, she lated added 9 tons of extra ballast and the following winter given a deeper keel. Throughout her racing creer she retained her gaff rig and was by no means outclassed by her Bermudian rivals. The 1929 Solent Regatta event records show Lulworth heading the fleet with 18 points, with Candida trailing next to last on 9. During this time she was owned by the banker Alexander Paton.
