Lot Essay

Sold with this lot is a handwritten note "Center 3,828 [patches], each corner 360 [patches], total 5268 [patches], stitches 158040 [each patch needing 30 stitches], Made by Charles Newcomb Spratton". Charles Newcomb of Spratton, Northants was a policeman injured during service and badly disabled. He is said to have made the quilt to occupy his time when no longer able to work. See "Patchwork", Averil Colby, 1978, p.128 for the use of patchwork as occupational therapy.
