Album containing seventy albumen prints, thirty-three hand-tinted, each approx. 8¼ x 10½ in. or the reverse, several signed, titled and numbered in the negatives, occasional numbers in pencil on mounts, half maroon morocco, titled Photographs and ruled in gilt on front cover, g.e., oblong 4to.

Samuel Hamilton Cartwright; thence by descent. Samuel Cartwright was the dentist to Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

Lot Essay

Approx. half the images are views and portrait studies around Egypt including views of the pyramids, a group portrait of Scottish men in kilts in front of the Sphinx, men on camels, portrait studies of men, women and children in traditional dress, street scenes and harbour views. The Japanese images include views around Osaka, Nara, Inari, Kiga, Hakone, and Kobe; portraits of Japanese women eating, a plant-seller, 'Judicial Hara-Kiri' and a crucifixion scene.
