Lot Essay

The photographs show antiquities found or collected by Luigi Palma di Cesnola during his time in Cyprus from 1865-77. The British Museum purchased material between 1871-76 but the majority of the finds are now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. A letter in the British Musuem dated 20 November 1872 refers to the fact that Cesnola undertook the photography for this excavation.
