Lot Essay

The company founded by Johann Georg Klinger (1764-1806) was continued after his death as J.G. Klinger's Kunsthandlung by his widow. Dekker and van der Krogt comment that: "From 1831 [it was] owned by J.P. Dreykorn and since 1852 by C.C. Abel, who changed the name to Abel-Klinger" (p. 176). The partial Antarctic coastline and the presence of Wilkes Land (discovered 1838-42) coupled with the "J.G. Klinger" signature would indicate that the globe probably dates from the mid 19th century.
