A 2¾-inch (7cm.) diameter terrestrial pocket globe, made up of twelve hand coloured engraved gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours (in Roman numerals), the ecliptic graduated in days and showing the symbols of the houses of the zodiac, the prime meridian marked Meridian of London, the continents coloured in outline, the oceans showing the voyages of Captain Cook and Anson, the Antarctic marked FROZEN OCEAN, (small areas neatly restored, short crack to Pacific), steel axis pins, in fishskin covered case with brass rim to both edges, brass hooks and eyes, with hand coloured engraved celestial gores to both halves showing the equatorial, ecliptic, constellations and stars (restored)

Lot Essay

Van der Krogt describes a similar globe as Lae 3. This uses the gores of the 1809 pocket globe (cf. the previous lot), with a few extra details added (e.g. the legend Dampier's Anchor below Java). Cox's retailer's label is pasted over the Lane label, which is visible through it.
