The 1979 Transglobe Expedition was the first attempt at a polar circumnavigation of the world, the expedition set out from Greenwich on 2nd September 1979. The team members were: Ranulph and Virginia Fiennes, Oliver Shepard, Charles Burton, Antony Bowring, Giles Kershaw and Simon Grimes.

Rolex confirm that at the time of the expedition Oliver Shepard asked them to fit a GMT-Master dial to his Explorer II wristwatch 1655/0, case number 3583460.
