Attributed to Cazotte on the basis of the contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper which reads: "This is a translation of the Diable Amoureux of Cazotte. It is more than probable that Lewis took his Idea of the character of Matilda in his Romance of the Monk from that of Biondetta, tho' he makes no mention of this is his 'full avowal of all the Plagiarims of which I am aware of myself.'" With a further pencil note attributing the translation to (?) B. Ker. Mathew Lewis published The Monk in 1795. The only English translation of Diable Amoureux listed in ESTC is dated 1793 and entitled The Devil in Love.
