Lot Essay

Petty was one of the original Fellows of the Royal Society. The subject of his paper is made clearer in the Dedication to the Duke of Newcastle where he calls it an attempt "to excite the World to the study of a little Mathematics, by shewing the use of 'Duplicate Proportion' in some of the most weighty of Humane affairs, which notion a Child of 12 years may have in an hour."
