Hazlitt was still labouring with An Essay on the Principles of Human Action when he undertook this abridgement of Abraham Tucker's seven-volume Light of Nature Pursued. The last volume had appeared in 1778, the year of his birth. Even if the abridgement was hackwork, its object was important to Hazlitt who genuinely admired the author, and regretted that his correctives to the prevailing materialist philosophy were not better known.
