Keynes notes that "the critical, descriptive, and sometimes autobiographical essays in Sketches of the Principal Picture Galleries in England were written for the London Magazine, where they appeared in 1822 and 1833." However, Criticism on Marriage-a-la-Mode had been printed many years before in the Round Table, 1817. Hazlitt's article on the Fine Arts in the Encyclopaedia Britannica was written in February and March, 1816, appearing in the first volume of the Supplement that year.
