WINSTON SPENCER CHURCHILL (1874-1965)
A one-page typed letter of 5 lines, signed, from 28 Hyde Park Gate, London, S.W.7, 9th August 1946, to Mr. Dalkmann, thanking him for: "the box of cigars, made especially for Goring, which you have kindly sent me. Pray accept my thanks and appreciation of the expression of goodwill which lies behind this gift. I shall keep these cigars as an interesting curiosity."
Signature slightly faded, crudely mounted on card.
Provenance
Mr. Dalkmann was the owner of the "Beurs" restaurant in Rotterdam during the Second World War when it was frequented by Germans stationed in the area. He assisted the Resistance by passing on information acquired in the restaurant, and was subsequently decorated by the Dutch for his Intelligence work. Having acquired a box of Field Marshal Goring's cigars, he presented them to Churchill after the war as a token of respect. A photograph of Dalkmann and his "Verzet" (Resistance) identity card are included in the lot together with a letter of provenance.
