Lot Essay

Although little is known of the life and career of Daniel Wuchters, his six year sojourn in Russia is well documented. He travelled to Moscow in 1662 as part of the Swedish peace delegation led by General Bengt Horn where he was to live with relatives and marry for the second time. He is recorded as having painted three major pictures in Moscow: The Town of Jericho, The Siege of Jerusalem and a Scene from the Life of Alexander the Great, all of which are now missing. In March 1667 he entered the service of the Tsar before leaving Russia at the beginning of the following year. Nothing else is known of his life and of his painting only two other pictures appear to survive: a Portrait of a Priest in the Ny Church in Modum near Oslo and a grisaille picture of The Continence of Scipio in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin (see Gemäldegalerie Berlin, Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, Berlin, 1986, p.258-9, no.575).
