WSPA
With a network of more than 300 member societies in over 70 countries, WSPA is the most widespread animals protection organisation in the world. They combine representation at government level with practical projects and education campaigns in their fight to end animals suffering and to establish a more compassionate attitude towards living creatures.
The Libearty campaign was launched by WSPA in 1992 to try and combat the problems facing what is one of the worlds best loved animals. All eight species of bear in the world today are endangered, five are close to extinction. One of the biggest threats to bears, along with the continual destruction of their habitat, is the lucrative trade in bear gall bladders. The gall bladders are used as a cure in traditional Chinese Medicine even though herbal substitutes are available. The Libearty campaign has also exposed other bear issues such as the barbaric 'sport' of bear baiting in Pakistan and bear hunting in the USA. WSPA have fortunately had some success with the Libearty campaign and are proud to say that their sanctuaries in Turkey and Greece which are home to rescued dancing bears. At these rehabilitation centres the bears are nursed back to health and once recovered are released into semi-wild enclosure to live out the rest of their lives in peace.
WSPA reply on donations from the public to fund their vital work. Help the real bears buy participating in this auction.
