Drawn circa 1901, this is a portrait of one of Matisse's male models Pignatelli, alias Bevilacqua. It closely relates to Matisse's bronze Le Serf of 1900-03, which portrays a bearded male nude with the arms cut below the shoulder (see: Pierre Schneider, Matisse, Paris, 1984, p. 543 for an illustration of the bronze cast)
