Lot Essay

James Whale began his career as a newspaper cartoonist. He began acting in Germany whilst a P.O.W. and after the armistice, he made the stage his career, initially as an actor, then a set designer, then a director. Whale is best remembered for four horror films Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man and The Bride of Frankenstein all excellent examples of this genre.
