Lot Essay

Edward Orton began his career as a stills photographer at Gainsborough Studios in 1934. From Gainsborough he moved to Ealing Studios where he remained for ten years. Some of Orton's portrait photographs were blown up to ten feet high to hang outside cinemas. During the war Orton served as a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy film unit section making documentary and training movies. Following the war, Orton returned to Ealing Studios and then moved to Hollywood for seven years where he worked in a portrait studio. Returning to England, Orton did freelance work for television. From the beginning of his career until 1973, Orton worked with many great mostly British stars and on many great t.v. series including: Michael Redgrave, Googie Withers, Stanley Baker, Brian Rix, Sid James, Paul Robeson, Richard Attenborough, John Mills, Stewart Granger, George Formby, Gordon Jackson, Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg.
