An American 70-Bore Percussion Sporting Rifle Of 'Kentucky' Type

With heavy octagonal sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves and signed 'S. Mier' on the breech (breech pitted), long engraved tang, flat lock (action defective) engraved with foliage and the initial 'H', striped maple full stock inlaid with engraved white metal panels including two fish, chequered grip, butt with cheek-piece set with an engraved white metal bird, and carved in relief with a bunch of grapes enriched with brass nails, white metal mounts including spur trigger- guard and pierced and engraved patch-box with hinged cover engraved 'S. Harden', set trigger, white metal fore-end cap, and later ramrod

Probably rebuilt from flintlock with a new barrel tang and lock, and perhaps barrel. Samuel Mier is recorded in Salisbury, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania, circa 1850-70
