A 28-Bore Turkish Miquelet-Lock Rifle, And A North African Flintlock Gun
The first late 18th Century, the second early 19th Century
The first with swamped twist octagonal sighted barrel cut with nine grooves, stamped with Co. Cork registration number, decorated with scrolling foliage and lines of dots in encrusted gold at the muzzle and breech, and retained by four engraved silver bands, gold-encrusted standing back-sight pierced with two apertures, iron tang covered with engraved silver (incomplete) and with engraved silver apron, gold-encrusted lock en suite with the barrel, figured Circassian walnut three-quarter stock (horn fore-end cap and ramrod-entry missing), swelling faceted butt inlaid with pierced silver panels, brass and horn roundels, and bands of white and stained horn with an engraved silver band between, and iron button trigger (ramrod missing); the second with octagonal sighted barrel struck with spurious marks at the breech and retained by nine engraved silver bands, flat lock with spurious inscription, full stock inlaid with engraved silver panels, and fish-tail butt with bone butt-cap (ramrod missing)
30½in. (77.5cm.) and 54in. (137.2cm.) barrels
A handwritten label attached to the second item reads:- 'This gun belonged to El Serum, Ruler of Cyrenaica - Buried at Jaghboub Oasis' (2)
