With octagonal barrels, the upper one sighted and signed in gold, the lower one engraved with the address, gold breech lines and platinum-lined touch-holes, scroll engraved tang, signed locks each with external mainspring, roller, rainproof pan, 'French' cock, and safety-catch, chequered figured walnut butt, engraved silver trigger-guard and pommel, each with traces of gilding, the latter with gold cap engraved with coronet, arms and motto, gold escutcheon with crest and coronet, and later iron ramrod with chequered tip

The arms and crest are those of the Earls of Howth. The pistol was probably made for the 3rd Earl (1803-1874), who was Lord Lieut. of co. Dublin, 1851-1874. The earldom became extinct in 1909
