A Rare German State Halberd Of The Guard Of Archduke Matthias Of Austria (1557-1619, Crowned Emperor In 1612)
Dated 1578
With tapering double-edged spike with medial ridge on each side, axe-blade with concave leading edge, small downcurved fluke, and open socket with etched clamp at its base, richly etched on both sides with flowers and foliage on a dotted (originally blackened) ground, enclosing at the base of the spike the cypher of the Archduke surmounted by an archducal bonnet, on the blade the arms of the house of Austria also with archducal bonnet, together with the motto 'Amat Victoria Curam' (Victory Requires Care), and on the fluke the date 1578, four straps, and wooden staff, probably original
