Lot Essay
Four of these illustrations were engraved and published in 1830 in Pierce Egan's The Finish to the Adventures of Tom, Jerry and Logic, in their Pursuits through Life in and out of London. It was published as a sequel either to the highly successful Life in London, 1821, through which Cruickshank had achieved his wide spread popularity or The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, Esq., and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, the Oxonian, in their Rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis of 1821. In this second book the three heroes are accompained on their adventures by Sir John Blubber (fat) and Philip Timothy Splinter (thin). The four subjects are, as inscribed below the engravings:
1. 'The hounds at a stand-still, Jerry enticed by the Pretty Gypsy Girl to have his fortune told. Logic breaking cover' (opp. p.90)
2. 'Strong Symptoms of Water on the Brain; and Logic's spread of 'no use' in the Floating Capital!' (opp. p.110)
3. 'Dangerous to be safe; or the abrupt departure:-
Jane Merrythought at her Wit's end! Lady Wanton's reputation in danger! and Jerry compelled to retreat' (opp. p.228)
4. 'Life on the Water - symptoms of 'Heavy Whey'; or a Drap too much for the 'uncommonly big Gentleman' (opp. p.265)
One of the other drawings was engraved by Cruikshank for Bernard Blackmantle's The English Spy of 1825 entitled 'Doncaster, Great St. Leger Race, & Characters on the Turf'
