Lot Essay

Ardizzone and his dog are amongst the group of figures.

In 1919 the Ardizzone family moved to London into a house at no. 130 Elgin Avenue, Maida Vale. The area had a marked character of its own with a wide range of pubs which were to remain a theme in Ardizzone's work throughout his life. Here, in these free and uninhibited surroundings, he extracted a world of his own and carefully depicted contemporary life, without judgment or satire.
