A Macao ivory chess set, 19th century
red stained and natural, the royal pieces, bishops and pawns carved with human heads, the European king and queen portrayed as Carlos I of Portugal and Marie Amelia, versus orientals, knights as horses' heads, rooks as turrets with sentry huts and flags, all on baluster knopped stems carved with floral ornament and stiff-leaf bands, king -- 3 7/8in. (10cm) high, pawn -- 2 3/8in. (6.2cm) high
