one side distinguished by blue plinths, the other yellow plinths, the royal pieces crowned, kings with long swords, bishops with hands clasped in prayer, knights as horses' heads with flowing manes, rooks as figures with mallets and shields, their helmets as castellated towers, pawns as grenadiers, wearing bearskin hats and holding batons, king -- 6in. (15.2cm) high, pawn -- 3 3/8in. (8.7cm) high; and a modern ceramic caricature set by S,Wilson, in predominantly white and blue glazes
