in bright polychrome, one side predominantly blue and white, the other black and red, heightened in gilt, the royal pieces crowned, the king flanked by a borzoi, the queen by figures of cats, the bishops as officers flanked by further dogs and cannon balls, the knights as horses flanked by goats, the rooks as sailing vessels, the hulls modelled as birds, the pawns as soldiers standing at sentry boxes, with geese to the rear, the bases stamped MADE IN THE USSR, and the maker's mark WB, pierced by an arrow motif, king -- 4in. (10.2cm) high, pawn -- 3¼in. (8.3cm) high
