Lot Essay

The proportions of this figure and its slightly swayed pose relate to the two Bodhisattva figures flanking a seated Buddha, from Shaanxi province, which are dated to between the late Tang to Five Dynasties period, illustrated by Wang Ziyun, Zhongguo Diaosu Yishu Shi (II), no. 358.

The modelling of the face with prominent urna and the treatment of the hair is similar to that of a Guanyin figure dated to the Song dynasty, from the Huang qian fo monastery in Shaanxi province, illustrated by Wang Xiyun (ed.), Shaanxi Gudai Shidiao Ke (I), no. 95.
