Lot Essay

No other vase of this pattern has been published.

This vase is an excellent example of the effect that could be created by using the intaglio form of decortion on a monochrome porcelain vessel, the technique of adding elaborate crisp decoration of archaistic motifs densly placed around the body, the details highlighted by the thin translucent glaze pooling in the deeper recesses to provide a contrast of colour tone, and to create two different shades of green from the same glaze, while simultaneously accentuating the tightly-packed archaistic design on the body and neck.
Cf. another very fine Qianlong-marked celadon-glazed vase, decorated in the same technique, included in the Christie's London Exhibition of Important Chinese Ceramics from the Robert Chang Collection, Catalogue, no. 71.
