Lot Essay

Craig Clunas comments in his article,"Object of the Month. White jade brush washer", Orientations, October 1986, that "Ming sources on desk accessories all distinguish between bixi (brushwashers) and bichan (brush testers), small palettes on which surplus ink could be removed with a stroke before contact with paper or silk", a probable use for the present lot.
