Lot Essay

Watt illustrates a closely related but less elaborate stand from the Sammy Chow collection with very similar ruyi-shaped feet, Chinese Jades from Han to Ch'ing, Catalogue, no. 146

Ruyi-shaped feet can be seen on other vessels from the same period such as the censer illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, Qing, vol. 6, no 127. The floral elements of the design, in particular the central petal-shaped stand, were part of the artistic repertoire of this period more commonly found on Mughal-style jades.

This stand is distinguished by the quality of the carving, the purity of the stone and its fine polish.
