on piece 1863 (10 July) large part wrapper from London, addressed to Shanghai "Via Marseilles" then redirected to Yokohama "p Ayrshire Lass" and bearing adhesives totalling 5/4d., remaining flap contains despatch c.d.s., Hong Kong and part Shanghai (20.7) c.d.s. along with type 5 c.d.s. with date and code slugs removed. This is the only example of this particular c.d.s. and makes a desirable and colourful exhibition piece, despite the missing corner from the face. Photo

Note: Very few type 5 c.d.s's have been recorded; two examples are known used with the type 4 "PAID" on 24th December 1861 and 7th February 1862 whilst later dates in February and March it is found on its own, either as an arrival or despatch c.d.s. It appears that the postmark was kept in reserve and, here, used by a Post Office examiner
